Trump’s new executive order excludes Russia from major sanctions in a law Congress passed in September. The president’s October 16 executive order is a betrayal of Ukraine, and his financial gift to Russia came within days of an “outage” of Elon Musk’s Starshield military satellites. The technical “outage” impaired Ukraine’s air defenses against Russia. One Ukrainian officer told Politico:
“This is comparable to a nuclear strike against us. All operations are on hold.”
Crooks and Liars has questioned Trump’s relationship with Russia for awhile. However, Trump and his gang are getting a new wave of U.S. and International backlash for helping Russia and hurting Ukraine.
American Backlash to Trump Helping Russia
Trump’s latest moves are drawing backlash from across the political spectrum. Even conservative publication The National Review believes Trump’s aid to Russia needs to be investigated. Former prosecutor Andrew D. McCarthy notes that Putin’s Russia is a long-standing “mortal adversary of the U.S.” Andrew D. McCarthy went further, writing:
“ In a properly functioning republic, there would be immediate hearings about this week’s shocking escalation of the Trump–Putin alliance…Instead, President Trump has sided with the totalitarian aggressor over the allied European democracy upon which it preys.”
Republican Senator John Cornyn shared a blistering tweet from journalist Steven Beschloss, who said the president was a traitor:
“Donald Trump is a traitor. And he’s not simply a traitor in the loose sense of someone who commits an act of betrayal…Trump is a traitor in the very particular sense laid out in the U.S. Constitution…adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.”
Former Secretary Pete Buttigieg weighed in on Trump’s actions toward Russia, and how it harms American troops in Iran. Buttigieg said:
“Russia is cooperating with Iran. So why is Trump cooperating with Russia? Like the diesel deal, this decision is a gift to the very forces attacking our service members.”
International Backlash to Trump Giving Aid and Comfort to Russia
International allies and media are using blunt words to describe Trump and friends’ latest actions.
German media outlet DER SPIEGEL criticized Trump for his backstabbing of Ukraine:
“Betrayal is a strong word, and it shouldn’t be used lightly. But what else should you call it when the most important military supporter of a country under attack stabs it in the back in the middle of a war, as the US is doing to Ukraine these days?”
French newspaper Le Monde lays out all of the elements of Trump’s betrayal:
“Calls for Zelensky’s resignation, an energy deal with Russia, reports of malfunctions in Starshield, a military system crucial for defending Ukraine that relies on Elon Musk’s satellite constellation: Everything coming out of Washington now serves Moscow’s interests, to the point that the world’s leading power is being reduced to a mere auxiliary of the Kremlin.”
Aubrey Allegretti of The London Times quoted Sir Malcolm Rifkind, UK former defense and foreign secretary:
“I think this week Donald Trump has shown himself as a person to be repulsive; as a President of the United States, to be a disgrace to his own people as well as to his international responsibilities…he has not only betrayed Ukraine in the middle of a war, fighting for its very existence, but he is also directly – not indirectly – directly responsible for the deaths of many Ukrainians who will not now be protected by the attempts that have been successfully made using intelligence provided indirectly by the United States.”
