The presidency is about much more than the person living in the building. The power of the presidency comes from the people. The people empower presidents by electing them, but they can also limit or expand their power by deciding whether the president’s party or the opposition controls Congress.

Donald Trump is term-limited, so if voters give Democrats control of all or part of Congress, it will limit Trump’s ability to act in many areas and shift the country toward electing the next president in 2028.
Polling shows that Democrats are the favored party to win November, so Trump is eye to eye with the end of his presidency.
When Kristen Welker went on the local NBC affiliate in Washington, DC, to promote Meet the Press and made the evenhanded statement, “He’s (Trump) going to loom large over these midterms. There’s no doubt about that. He, of course, has endorsed a slate of candidates in the primaries. He’s had some mixed results, but most recently, his pick of Senator Darline Graham, of course, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, was successful in her primary battle, so now she takes on Dr. Annie Andrews in South Carolina.”
Nothing that Welker said was factually inaccurate or partisan. Her statement was about as evenhanded as possible.
Trump will be a major factor in the midterms, and he has some big endorsement failures in his own party.
Telling Trump that he is not as powerful within the Republican Party as he used to be set him off and caused the president to threaten Welker with an FCC investigation.
None of this is really about Welker or her statement. It is all about Trump’s loss of power.
