Donald Trump has always been unusually sensitive about the size of his crowds, so it probably wasn’t a coincidence that he made a point of insisting that there were no empty seats at Wednesday’s Republican midterm convention in Dallas.
Unfortunately for Trump, cameras have a pesky habit of showing reality, and the president isn’t a reality-based kind of guy.
As Trump addressed the crowd at the American Airlines Center, he declared that the venue was packed, even claiming that people were waiting outside for seats. “You don’t have any seats that are empty,” Trump said.
A camera operator apparently disagreed. The view suddenly widened, revealing large numbers of visibly empty seats throughout the arena.
The awkward moment happened during a convention that Republicans had promoted as a major show of enthusiasm for Trump and the GOP ahead of November’s midterm elections. Instead, the event was plagued by conspicuously sparse attendance in portions of the arena, with empty seats visible even as Trump took the stage.
The optics were particularly unfortunate because Trump had reportedly touted the event as sold out beforehand. Organizers were even seen attempting to encourage people to move into empty sections shortly before the president’s appearance.
And then came Trump’s familiar insistence that what everyone was seeing wasn’t actually what they were seeing. There’s an Orwell quote about that. You know the one.
Trump has spent years boasting about the size of his crowds and attacking anyone who suggests that his events aren’t as packed as he claims. But on Wednesday night, he didn’t need a fact-checker to challenge him.
The camera did it for him.
And perhaps the most revealing part is that this wasn’t some random campaign rally. The Republican Party designed this unusual two-day convention specifically to energize the GOP ahead of the midterms—and put Trump at the center of it.
If the goal was to demonstrate overwhelming enthusiasm for Trump’s Republican Party, hundreds of empty seats were probably not the visual they were hoping for.
Especially when the president had just insisted they didn’t exist.
