Stewart blames Trump’s “No Kings” dump for GOP election beatdown

Jon Stewart said that the “arrogance” of President Donald Trump is to blame for the Republican washout in this week’s elections.

On the latest episode of his podcast “The Weekly Show,” the host and comedian pointed to one presidential social media post in particular, in which an AI-generated Trump dumped excrement on protestors from a jet, as indicative of the “dismissiveness” of the administration.

“I am not a political consultant,” Stewart said. “It may be that when the president of the United States tweets out a video of him dumping diarrhea on the American public, they find that slightly dismissive. And maybe that’s what all this is.”

Stewart left the granular breakdown to the consultants, preferring a simple story of cause and effect.

“I don’t know about the argument of populism vs. security state Democrats or moderate Democrats. But I do know that the arrogance and dismissiveness and chaos and incompetence of this administration’s first year has to have a result,” he said. “And it seems like it does. It seems like a direct result of those elements within our society.”

Stewart was hopeful throughout the podcast. calling it a “sunny day in a sea of monsoons.” Still, he had little faith that the Democratic Party would capitalize on its good fortune. He called the party a “mess” and wondered how its leaders might fritter away the momentum.

“There is this underlying potential energy within the United States of America that is much larger than I think any of us could have imagined, and channeling that energy directionally will be the challenge for whoever wants to harness it,” Stewart said. “I still don’t believe they’re doing that.”
